Hoi An is an ancient city located downstream of Thu Bon river in the coastal plain of Quang Nam province, at 30 km from Da nang city. Here retains almost intact for more than a thousand monuments architecture with bold artistic tradition. Each ancient house is a prominent individual in the vestiges of the old town architecture and is considered as a “living museum”. By, many years from now people of Hoi An still live their daily lives right in the heart of the city, they attached their life with each ancient architecture with on their land.
By nature, Hoi An was an urban port, the city with more than thousand architectural vestiges which combines artistic and cultural in the harmony of Eastern and Western culture. Until now, centuries passed with the historical upheavals, each house and each street still reflect these ancient aspects.
According to researchers, the architectural style of Hoi An was renewed at the beginning of 19th century after Hoi An lost its role of a commercial port to yield to Danang’s one, a new port built by French people. In 1999, according to statistic, there were on the whole 1.360 vestiges, landscapes as temple, pagoda, tomb, bridge, well, church, house… distributed on the small streets.
Among the architectural set of this old town, the essential part is ancient houses, generally distributed in three urban districts (Minh An, Cẩm Phô, Sơn Phong), namely the old house Tan Ky (Tấn Ký), Phung Hung (Phùng Hưng), Quan Thang (Quân Thắng), family temple of Trần… The general style of these monuments is under a pipe’s shape which binds district to district. The narrow front is reserved as a store, the medium is the yard, the posterior part is as a store and housing, finally the door communicates with another district or river. The house is of wooden framework, three parts with an alley in the medium, covered of tile and paved of brick or stones. On all the former doors, a piece of wood is carved with symbol of the eight divinatory signs or the tiger, dragon face. The interior ornament is very sumptuous and splendid.
In Hoi An, we can recognize the traces of time not only through the architectural style but also on the roofs covered of foam, the gray walls covered of moulds… Time seems to slow down on this peaceful land. Some main architectural attraction, learn more…
