Cam Kim Island Hoi An . Travel Guide. Cam Kim Island is a beautiful slice of rural life a short ferry ride from the centre of Hoi An. Not far from Hoi An?s central market, packed wooden boats constantly shuttle people, bicycles, motorcycles and produce across the Thu Bon River between the old town and Cam Kim Island. It?s a great place for an early morning or late afternoon cycle.

It is renowned for being home to the master woodcarvers who produced the exceptional carvings of the merchants’ homes and public buildings in the ancient town of Hoi An.

Cam Kim is a scenic rural island which is almost entirely free of tourists. The only main road leads along its middle to the eastern tip, from where ferries depart back to town. With your bike or motorcycle, you will be able to explore numerous picturesque pathways along with some marvelous bamboo bridges, nicknamed monkey bridges. These may look rickety but are strong as can be. Stunning rural scenes, rice paddies, villages and quiet roads are the big draws of Cam Kim. While cycling in Vietnam usually involves nerve wracking encounters with large trucks and straying cars, Cam Kim?s roads are traffic free, flat and relatively safe.

camkimisland2Cam Kim Island can be reached by ferry from the pier east of the market alongside Bach Dang. The boat ride is part of the fun. The local looks askance as you board with your bike. They?re more accustomed to having their packed ferry photographed by bemused tourists from ashore than they are being joined for the ride.

It is possible to take a motorbike or bicycle with you, which is highly recommended to those who intend to see more than the wood-carving shops lined up a few hundred meters along the island’s pier road. Each shop has its own distinctive style and you can detect some brilliant wood carving on display while watching the artisans at work.
